Stories

  • Pickman's Model · 7 pages

Thurber befriends an eccentric painter named Pickman who paints incredibly morbid paintings of demonic entities. Pickman shows Thurber his underground studio in a old part of the city and shows him his latest painting, that of an evil looking monster feeding on humans. Pickman explains he takes photographs of backgrounds that he uses in his paintings. When Pickman gets spooked by a noise and goes to investigate, Thurber pockets one of Pickman's photographs. After he returns to the city, he sees that the photograph was of the monster in the painting. These demons that Pickman paints are real!

  • I Dared to Enter the Haunted Room! · 5 pages

A scientist builds an ultimate bomb and plans to use it to hold the world hostage. He hides it in a room believed haunted, but when he goes to give his ultimatum to the UN he realizes that he is now a ghost.

  • The World That Was Lost! · 4 pages

An old eccentric in a wheelchair hires a sea captain to take him to a spot where he believes that the lost continent of Atlantis lies. When they reach their destination he reveals himself to be a merman and thanks the sailors for bringing him home before diving overboard.

  • The Threat from the 5th Dimension! · 5 pages

The 5th dimension is the dream dimension. The creatures there are trying to pass into this dimension, but belief in their existence as opposed to surmising a mere dream experience disrupts the structure of the dream dimension and forces the creatures to withdraw from our world. The narrator sells his story to Strange Tales to encourage readers to believe in the creatures and frustrate their invasion aspirations.
